A Pause at the Turning

“Holy Darkness” (detail), by Sylvia Everett. CLICK HERE for full work.

The power of attraction

flows throughout the universe,

            turning even light

            into the darkest void.

In the black hole darkness

all we need for life is born.

In the darkest night of cruel oppression

a wailing woman generates a life

            whose light has come

to fill the world

with joy.

A sparkling star,

a whisper,

an invitation

            to a universe reborn.

  1. Jyoti, thank you so much for this poetic probing of some of the many dimensions of holy darkness. I hope other readers will check the internet for your work, to get a sense of the wider eye out of which this comes. We are grateful for the ways you have constantly opened up the “inscape” of our lives, especially in these deeply troubling times.

  2. Your dreams of darkness speak to me.
    Not just words.
    Words and images flow
From the same womb of silence.
The needle’s eye weaves and stitches stars that hold together the universe.

Kabir the mystic weaver soaks his fabric in a vat of darkness
His threads are words pricking the depths with flicks of light
    Binding but also breaking through.
Words strike the night, sounding its flow
Gathered into seamless sleep and unknowing
    Shrouding depths; veiling the light
Swaddled and swathed in the timeless, among the straws
that feed the cattle of our souls,
    herding lost animals stumbling
Over rocky hills and deep caverns
    Of inner landscapes

  3. Stunning work and a beautiful message. As we hurtle through the universe we embrace our ability like a young child to contemplate the wonder of creation. This season I am embraced by my little grandchildren- today we watch as the sun rises over the the mountains…and I renew my commitment to make whatever contribution I can to preserve the decency and honor and hopefulness of our species so they have a future of happiness and safety.
