Blessed Be the Bond

My earlier book on marriage and family entitled Blessed Be the Bond is now available free on this website. First published in 1985, this is its third edition, thanks to the encouragement, labor, and support of Prof. Richard Hunt, a long-time teacher and researcher in this area.

This little book seeks to bring together in a critical and systematic way the perspectives of ethics, theology, and the social and personality sciences.

The chapters lay out some of the major changes in marriage and family over the past few generations and then explore four theological symbols – sacrament, covenant, vocation, and communion – that have been used to guide Christians in this complex arena of personality, family, household structure and their social and religious contexts.

Finally, I sketch out a theological perspective on marriage and family grounded in the symbol of communion.

You can read or download Blessed Be the Bond by clicking on the title. It will then open in Adobe Acrobat Reader. (You can download Adobe Acrobat Reader (free) to read it on your computer.) You can then save it to your computer.

  1. Bill,
Thanks for the offer. I still have the copy that you sent when it was first published.
